Aromatherapy is an ancient method of healing and relaxation that has been practised for over four thousand years. Aromatherapy works by using scents to create a sense of well being and can be used to solve a variety of problems and conditions.
The benefits of aromatherapy can be achieved using different methods, some of which we have outlined below.
Taking a bath is the ultimate opportunity to enjoy aromatherapy and relax. To enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy while bathing first of all close all the windows and door to your bathroom to seal in the steam. Prepare a warm bath and when the water has finished pouring add around ten drops of an essential oil of your choice.
A variety of substances can be used as essential oils such as lavender and Cedarwood to gain a range of effects including relief from insomnia and general relaxation. As the oil mixes into the water the scent will rise with the steam and circulate around the room. Now simply sit back, relax and enjoy the benefits.
As well as providing a method of relaxation, aromatherapy can also be used to improve the condition of your skin. Essential oils can provide additional moisture in the skin when mixed with a carrier oil. As essential oils come in strong, concentrated forms they require dilution before use. Essential oils can be added to a carrier oil such as almond oil, hazelnut oil or wheatgerm oil to dilute the concentration and prevent the skin from becoming irritated. Different carrier oils will have different additional benefits such as enhanced scent or traces of vitamins to improve the condition of the skin further.
You can also achieve good results by developing existing products. Choose a cream or lotion free from fragrance and lanolin and mix into the cream a few drops of an essential oil of your choice. Different oils will have different properties such as lemon which can help reduce the appearance of cellulite and patchouli which can reduce the visible effects of scarring.
Essential oils can be used when giving a massage to help boost the effects of the experience. The energising and calming power of massage can be enhanced further depending upon the oil used and the pace of the massage. Fast strokes while massaging will stimulate the muscles whereas slow movements will aid relaxation.
To prepare your solution, take a small bottle that can hold 2 fluid ounces. Half fill the bottle with your desired carrier oil and fill the remainder of the bottle with about 15 drops of your chosen essential oil. You can use just one essential oil or up to three, although exceeding three may limit the potential of your solution as the oils become too weakly concentrated. When you have made your desired blend of oils shake the bottle well to mix the solution, leave to settle then apply.
If stored away from sunlight in cool conditions your blend may last for up to three months. If you are unsure how old your blend is then test the fragrance given off. If the blend seems unpleasant then it is best to throw it away and start a fresh.
